Marubi National Museum of Photography

The Marubi National Museum of Photography is the first museum of photography in Albania, one of the richest in the Balkans region with an archive of over 500.000 negatives in a period of time which goes from the end of the 19th century, exactly in 1856 when Pietro Marubi, an Italian from Piacenza founded its photographic studio, to end of the 20th century.

During the communism period, when all private activities were prohibited, the last of the dynasty, Gege Marubi donated the family archive to the state. Other photographers of the city ateliers did the same. In 1970 the Marubi Phototeque was founded as a sector of the city museum administrated by the Municipality of Shkodër. In 2003, the Phototeque passed to the administration of the Albanian Ministry of Culture. On May 9, 2016, the Marubi National Museum of Photography was inaugurated with the collection of the Phototeque. The new museum is one of the greatest cultural heritages of Albanian documenting over one century of our history, bringing “to light” important moments, people and events serving as an important passport for the Albanian culture.
